My Orthodox Journey
I have been meaning to have a ‘The Story of my Journey into Orthodoxy’ tab…

But life is so busy and I keep forgetting.

But I will reply to my messages soon (just have some exams to do first) and I will put the tab in :)

Sure it isn’t the most flattering photo, but I am rocking my Christos Anesti shirt :) (Taken with instagram)

This is probably a very western thing to say, but I feel like every Orthodox people should have one of these shirts because they are so cool. And it is an item of clothing that will last forever because you can only wear it between the Resurrection and the Ascension. In any case, I have had a few funny looks today, but I am not shy about my faith and I love Orthodoxy. So yet again…CHRISTOS ANESTI! Just a thought: If I do that word cloud thing around the Ascension, I wonder if the words ‘Christos’ and ‘Anesti’ will be the most commonly used words on my tumblr :)

All the lights are turned off until the midnight Pascha service because…
Luke 23:44-46
And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst. And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

Something I wrote awhile ago in answer to someone who asked about the Orthodox stance on the Catholic dogma of the Immaculate Conception of St Mary.

Sorry for the late reply. I thought I had answered your question, but when I received this I thought I would try and find a better way to answer it… so I shall answer it a different way (The Bible and Becoming Orthodox as my key references).

I can’t remember the exact question, but I believe it was something along the lines of, ’ Does the Eastern Orthodox Church believe in the Dogma of Immaculate Conception (of the Virgin Mary)?’

There is a long and short answer…

The Great Schism occurred in 1054. In 1854 Rome established the Dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, so it is therefore a Roman Catholic doctrine and not an Orthodox one.

According to the dogma of Immaculate Conception, ‘not only was Christ born on earth without sin but Mary entered the world without original sin’ The first part being the Immaculate Conception of Christ within St. Mary, and the second part being the immaculate conception of Mary, within her mother.

YES, we believe in the Immaculate Conception of CHRIST as the Nicene Creed states, “…Who (referring to our Lord Jesus Christ) for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man…” and in Matthew 1:18, ‘…[Mary] was found with child of the Holy Spirit.’

The Orthodox Church does not believe that the conception of Mary was Immaculate, and that she was born without original sin. If she were born without original sin there would be no reason for her to worship God (as she would be perfect herself), and there would be no reason for her to have been favoured or honoured by the Churh. We believe that she did not willfully sin, which is why she was chosen to be the bearer of God. Favour for Mary is seen in Luke 1:28 & 30, ‘And having come in, the angel said to her, “Rejoice, highly favoured one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women”…” Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour in God.”’

In short we do not believe in the Dogma of Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.

Bible study tonight…

Fr James came over and we did a bible study on Matthew 7:1 on Judging Others.

Funny how these things are always relevant.

Which reminds me, I need to look at my own flaws more and try (even more so) to live a life that is God pleasing.

It frustrates me when people discuss Christianity, but are completely ignorant as to what they are talking about.

It can be quite offensive, and even hurtful.

My apology for all spelling mistakes and grammar errors.

Please excuse all my spelling mistakes and grammar errors. I am usually quite meticulous when it comes to my writing (although my typos can be terrible), but as of late I have only being going on tumblr in the very late evenings. With this, comes spelling mistakes and grammar errors in the dozens.

I am sorry, please look past it and please don’t think that I am an idiot :)

Hope you all have a good weekend. I know I will.

I am going to one of Alex’s gigs tonight.

I will be tutoring english for 2 hours tomorrow morning, then doing assignments, then having dinner with Alex’s family on Saturday night.

Then on Sunday I have Liturgy and then Alex is coming to mine for dinner.

All in all I have a good weekend ahead.

Love to all,

Jess
